Your baby's first year is packed with rapid development — more change happens between birth and 12 months than at any other point in life. Understanding what milestones to watch for each month helps you celebrate progress and spot potential delays early, when early intervention is most effective.

Month 1–2: Your newborn is already learning. By the end of month 1, most babies can briefly lift their head when placed on their tummy, respond to loud sounds by startling, and focus on faces within 8–12 inches. By month 2, babies begin social smiling — one of the most exciting early milestones — and start making cooing sounds. They track slow-moving objects with their eyes and begin to recognize their caregiver's voice.

Month 3–4: Motor control improves significantly. At 3 months, babies hold their head steady when upright and push up on their arms during tummy time. By month 4, they can roll from tummy to back, reach for and bat at objects, and laugh out loud. They recognize familiar faces and begin babbling with consonant-vowel combinations like 'ba' and 'da'.

Month 5–6: This is the rolling and reaching phase. By 5 months, most babies can roll both ways and sit briefly with support. At 6 months, many babies begin sitting unassisted for short periods. They transfer objects between hands, respond to their own name, and begin showing stranger anxiety. The first teeth may appear around this time. Solid foods are typically introduced during this window.

Month 7–8: Babies become increasingly mobile. By 7 months, many are army crawling or getting into a crawling position. They begin understanding object permanence — if you hide a toy, they look for it. At 8 months, they may pull themselves to standing using furniture (cruising). They imitate sounds and gestures and show clear preferences for familiar people.

Month 9–10: Crawling is typically well established. Fine motor skills sharpen — look for the pincer grasp (picking up small objects with thumb and forefinger) appearing around month 9. Babies understand 'no,' wave bye-bye, and point at objects of interest. They may say their first recognizable word — often 'mama' or 'dada' with meaning.

Month 11–12: Many babies take their first independent steps between months 11 and 14 — wide variation is normal. By month 12, most can stand alone briefly, cruise confidently along furniture, and walk with one hand held. They typically have 2–6 words with meaning and follow simple one-step instructions. They point to communicate, imitate actions, and engage in simple pretend play.

When to contact your pediatrician: Every baby develops at their own pace, but certain signs warrant a conversation with your doctor. At any age: loss of previously acquired skills. By 2 months: not smiling at people, not tracking moving objects. By 4 months: not holding head steady, not making sounds. By 6 months: not rolling either way, not laughing. By 9 months: not sitting with support, not responding to name. By 12 months: not crawling, not using gestures, not saying any words.
