Ovulation is the release of a mature egg from the ovary — it happens once per cycle and lasts only 12–24 hours. The fertile window, however, is 5–6 days long: sperm can survive in the reproductive tract for up to 5 days, so having intercourse in the days leading up to ovulation is just as effective as on the day itself. Understanding your fertile window accurately significantly improves conception chances.

Sign 1 — Cervical mucus changes: This is the most reliable daily indicator. In the days approaching ovulation, cervical mucus transitions from dry or sticky (early cycle) to creamy and white (approaching fertile window) to clear, slippery, and stretchy — often described as resembling raw egg whites. This 'egg white cervical mucus' (EWCM) indicates peak fertility. Check daily by wiping from front to back before using the toilet and observing the consistency.

Sign 2 — Basal body temperature (BBT) shift: Your resting body temperature drops slightly just before ovulation and then rises 0.2–0.5°C after the egg is released — and stays elevated for the rest of your cycle. To use BBT: take your temperature every morning before getting up, using a BBT thermometer (more precise than regular thermometers), at the same time daily. Track for 2–3 cycles to see your pattern. The sustained rise confirms ovulation occurred but cannot predict it in advance — combine with cervical mucus for forward-looking prediction.

Sign 3 — Ovulation predictor kits (OPKs): OPKs detect the luteinizing hormone (LH) surge that triggers ovulation 24–36 hours before the egg is released. Test once daily starting from day 10 of your cycle (for a 28-day cycle), or 5–6 days before your expected ovulation. A positive OPK means ovulation is coming — this is your highest-priority fertile day. Digital OPKs (smiley face indicators) are easier to read than line-based strips if you find strip interpretation confusing.

Sign 4 — Mittelschmerz (ovulation pain): About 20% of women feel a sharp or dull ache on one side of the lower abdomen at ovulation — this is called Mittelschmerz (German for 'middle pain'). It typically lasts minutes to hours and can switch sides each cycle. While not a reliable standalone indicator, when it aligns with mucus and OPK data, it adds confidence to timing.

Sign 5 — Cervical position changes: The cervix moves higher, softens, and opens slightly at ovulation. This requires checking your cervix with a clean finger regularly to notice the difference — it takes a few cycles to learn your baseline. SHOW is the acronym: Soft, High, Open, Wet indicates fertile phase; firm, low, closed indicates non-fertile phase.

Sign 6 — Breast tenderness and bloating: Some women experience mild breast tenderness or bloating at ovulation due to the hormonal surge. These are less specific signs — they also occur premenstrually — so use them as supporting evidence rather than primary indicators.

Sign 7 — Increased libido: Hormonal changes at ovulation naturally increase sexual desire in many women — an evolutionary mechanism to optimize conception timing. If you notice heightened interest in sex mid-cycle, it may align with your fertile window.

How to track it all: Log cervical mucus daily, take BBT every morning, use OPKs starting day 10, and note any physical symptoms. After 2–3 cycles, patterns emerge and prediction becomes reliable. Use TrackWise-AI to log all of this in one place — it calculates your predicted fertile window based on your logged data and sends reminders when you are approaching peak fertility.
