How much weight should I gain during pregnancy?
The Institute of Medicine (IOM) 2009 guidelines recommend different weight gain targets based on your pre-pregnancy BMI. These ranges balance baby health outcomes (birth weight, preterm birth risk) with maternal health (gestational diabetes, hypertension, post-delivery weight retention).
- Underweight (BMI below 18.5): 12.5 – 18 kg total
- Normal weight (BMI 18.5–24.9): 11.5 – 16 kg total
- Overweight (BMI 25–29.9): 7 – 11.5 kg total
- Obese (BMI 30 and above): 5 – 9 kg total
These are guidelines, not strict rules. Your OB or midwife will assess your individual health factors. The most important thing is consistent monitoring — small deviations are normal, but large deviations above or below target may warrant a conversation with your provider.
